Nasi Lemak

Nasi lemak: the dish Malaysians eat at any hour

If one plate sums up Malaysian food, it’s nasi lemak. Often described as the national dish, it’s eaten for breakfast, lunch, supper and everything in between, from roadside stalls to hotel buffets.

What is nasi lemak?

Nasi means rice and lemak means rich or creamy. The rice is cooked in coconut milk, usually with pandan leaves, which give it a soft fragrance. The classic plate comes with:

  • Sambal: a sweet, spicy chilli paste, and the part every cook is judged on
  • Ikan bilis: crispy fried anchovies
  • Roasted peanuts
  • Egg: boiled, fried or as an omelette
  • Cucumber slices to cool things down

Popular add-ons

  • Ayam goreng: fried chicken, often the most popular choice
  • Rendang: slow-cooked beef or chicken in a rich, spiced coconut sauce
  • Sambal sotong: squid in chilli sauce
  • Paru: crispy fried beef lung, for the adventurous

How to order

The simplest version is nasi lemak bungkus, a small portion wrapped in banana leaf and paper. It’s cheap, filling and perfect on the go. At a stall or mamak restaurant you can order a plate and choose your sides, or pick from trays of dishes laid out at the counter.

If you can’t take much heat, ask for the sambal on the side.

Where to eat it

You’ll find nasi lemak almost everywhere: morning stalls, mamak restaurants, food courts and kopitiams. Some of the best is sold from small stalls early in the morning, often gone by mid-morning.

Frequently asked questions

Traditionally at breakfast, but today it’s eaten at any time of day, including late at night.
